Thank you for the great review! Reading this book in 2023 changed my worldview as an American.

Before I read Hämäläinen, I divided American history into pre- and post-Colombian, pre- and post-Manifest Destiny. Now I see non-European civilizations in the Americas as agents of history rather than roadkill, and first contacts as inflections rather than deterministic.

I also appreciate the profound influence of these civilizations on who we are today. Mestizaje is everywhere you look.
