That's a fantastic story. So good to read of positive environmental progress. But all that went before is heartbreaking.
It's interesting to me right now because I'm looking at New Zealand waterways and what it will take to restore some of them. I interviewed someone about lake restoration today and it's such a long game, you need people who have that intergenerational vision.

There is this eternal tug-of-war between those who believe human flourishing is dependent on economic exploitation of the environment, and those who feel that our flourishing is dependent on a healthy ecosystem. In the short term the first camp is correct, but on the long term the second camp is right... Unfortunately so much species loss occurs before the first camp sees its error..
