There is so much more I want to write about! So, I'll be introducing bonus articles for paid subscribers
If you become a paid subscriber, it directly leads to more The Weekly Anthropocene articles existing!
Hi,
I’m Sam Matey, and I really, really enjoy writing The Weekly Anthropocene. This newsletter has been a labor of love for me since October 2017 (here’s the old archive). In mid-2022, I moved to Substack, and turned on a “payments” option: a few really nice people (you know who you are!) decided to become paid subscribers to support my writing.
There’s a huge amount of incredible, fascinating work being done around the world to try to build a good Anthropocene for humanity and its biosphere, and I’d like to write about a lot more of it! In addition to the weekly news roundup, I have tons of ideas on extra stuff to write about: more interviews, Deep Dives, book reviews, and perhaps even more in-person journalism like my 2019 Madagascar Diaries. The limiting factor on my writing is time, and the limiting factor on my time is the need to make money.
So, I’m going to start writing more paid content (starting next week!), while keeping the core weekly news roundup free. I think my writing style and subject choice provide unique value that will make paid subscribing worth it. What other publication would bring you articles on cutting-edge sustainable deep sea mining, Alexander von Humboldt, the Garamantes, turtle rescue, and why Nuclear Power is Better than Fossil Fuels, but Renewables are Better than Nuclear?
Furthermore, I’m hoping to be able to up the pace from two to three articles a week. More paid subscribers would make that possible! If you’d like more of The Weekly Anthropocene’s data-driven, solutions-focused independent journalism, please become a paid subscriber!
Thank you so much for reading,
Sam
