Offshore wind being good neighbors to marine life, a drop in deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon, low-carbon concrete, a traumatized orca starting a band of boat attackers, and more!
Low carbon concrete? I'm genuinely excited at the possibility. This is the kind of change which could make a real difference. Also the orcas. Although I feel slightly guilty saying this - good on them.
Also excited because the NZ government is partnering with our local steel company to halve their coal use in steel production by buying electric arc furnaces. While I'd rather the company paid the cost themselves, what really matters is the massive emissions reduction at a single stroke.
Great issue! ❤️ the bubble curtains! Electricity going clean, more coming online daily. So too cleaner cement. Orcas preemptively defending themselves through taught family traditions. Who knew!?
Sam, thank you for reporting on innovations like low-carbon cement. To help me gauge the potential growth of such technologies, it would be helpful to know more about the price and the constraints (if any) on the required inputs. For instance, you write “CarbonBuilt makes cement with calcium-rich industrial waste instead of limestone.” How much such industrial waste is available in the US and how much would be required if 100% of US cement were to be produced using this method?

Thanks! I'm excited as well! Industrial decarbonization is zooming ahead way faster than most analysts predicted.

Thanks-that's a great summary of this issue! I'm glad you liked it!
