Sam, you are a simply wonderful travel journalist-. You really are! I've had so much enjoyment and edification reading this series. There are so many memorable sights youve relayed, so many interesting people you met, so much history and culture...

I think Delhi was a capstone. The Jain bird hospital, the apex of that. You said, "Humans can be pretty freakin’ awesome creatures sometimes." Indeed that gives me hope too and I feel you skirt something very very profound there. A realization of our true nature which is something only partly human. A bright center radiating out and becoming all life forms.

i want to share a link to your india travel trip articles on metafilter, but I can't figure out how to link to them either individually or as a whole, as there isn't the usual share link on the emails. they were so good to read and i really enjoyed especially the last one and the interviews with local experts. Bird hospital forever

The Cultural Tutor (Areopagus newsletter, not on Substack) had a great segment on Akshardham not too long ago. That too is a lengthy but erudite weekly read

Great to read this report. And glad to hear I am not the only Westerner who went to Mysore these crazy hot days, haha.

This is an outstanding report, Sam! I appreciate your optimism in the face of that unprecedented heat wave, and you showed that the people there were carrying on. A more traditional journalist would look for the quick angle, which would probably be how awful the heat was, and just stick to that.

One question I had: what was the humidity to go along with those temperatures? I’ve experienced 115 degrees in the desert when it’s dry and around 100 here in Michigan when it’s quite humid (70+% in the daytime and 99% at night, say). I’d be curious to know what the heat index or wet bulb temperature was at the time you were there.

This whole series has been a great service. Thanks for your reporting!
