Great article. Perhaps it shouldn't be a surprise to learn that Rome had (non-white) peer civilizations who have been sidelined in conventional narratives of history. Hopefully a fuller view of this past will help us better understand our present, as you describe. Humans are capable of amazing things, and it's important to have success stories like this as inspiration while we tackle contemporary resource problems.
