Hi,
The Weekly Anthropocene is currently in Mexico! I arrived in Mexico City during the last week of January 2025, and I plan to be in Mesoamerica for the next few months. There’s a lot of fascinating work happening in Mexico right now, with the potential for lots more in the near future (recently elected President Claudia Sheinbaum is a former climate scientist!) and I’m excited to learn about these extraordinary ecosystems, communities, landscapes, and cultures.
This will be substantially different from my recent reporting journey around India in May-June 2024. In India, my time was 100% devoted to in-person reporting (even temporarily suspending the weekly news roundup to focus on this!), allowing me to entirely research, write, and publish ten in-depth articles in a month and a half.
My current trip is not like that. In Mexico, I’ll be continuing all my regular work, including writing The Weekly Anthropocene and Your Daily Dose of Climate Hope. So it’s kind of a remote work/”digital nomad” situation, meaning that I’ll likely end up writing only a few occasional first-person “in the field” articles from Mexico. However, I have already lined up some interesting folks to talk to and projects to visit while I’m in Mexico, so there will definitely be some articles at some point! I’m sending this note to provide some context so readers don’t wonder what the heck’s going on when I send a future article describing first-person reporting from Mexico.
Thank you so much for reading,
Sam

Hey Sam! Your mission in Mexico and Mesoamerica is exciting. I'm looking forward to reading your updates. I have tremendous respect for President Dr. Sheinbaum. Her field, environmental engineering, combines many different fields of areas of expertise. As mayor of Mexico City she expanded the public transit system and oversaw the installation of the largest solar energy project of its kind - greatly improving the quality of life according to my scientific colleagues in the city. She is positioned to do great things for the region. I wish her success.
